British aviator Tracey Curtis-Taylor was the speaker for the first Shackleton lecture given on 19 October at DHZH. Tracey spoke about her 30-year endeavour to fly a by-plane from England to Australia following in the footsteps of her hero Amy Johnson.
The fascination lecture reinforced the value of grit, determination and courage and how that, and a sense of adventure, should be applied to everyday life.
As a young lady Tracey learned to fly in South Africa while she was working as a waitress and through determination and focus she followed her dream, first travelling across Africa by truck, and eventually becoming one of the leading names in vintage aviation.
One group who were eager to learn all they could from her were, members of DHZH extra-curricular activities group, ‘The model aeroplane club’. After the lectures Tracey was treated to a tour of the model aeroplane club, where she inspected the club’s planes and discussed the issues they face when flying.
The students took the time to explain to Tracey that Zhuhai will shortly be very busy with regards to aviation as the “Airshow China” will be starting next month. Airshow China is a six day event, held from 1st to 6th November at the China International Aviation Exhibition Center in Zhuhai.
