“Farbwerte,” an exhibition of German and Chinese teenager paintings of national flags is being held at 53 Art Museum through January 20. The exhibition is being organized by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Guangzhou and the Guangdong Art Promotion Association.
National flag, the distinct symbol of a country, always evokes people’s different feelings like patriotism, loftiness, hope and pride. Farbwerte means color value in English. Different colors in national flags convey different meanings, for instance, red means vitality and revolution; yellow means fortune and prosperity; and while means peace and justice. The exhibition aims to raise an awareness that the loftiness of a national flag stems from the love and trust of human beings.
Over 30 teenagers from China and Germany are involved in this program. The organizers hope the paintings and the text descriptions arouse people’s reflections about the original meaning of national flags. They also would like visitors to contemplate the way children look at and think about the world through their paintings. Yin He, a 13-year-old Chinese girl, drew a female stretching her hand to touch the sky. Yin is trying to express her wish to see a starry sky every night.
Additionally, through this event, the organizers hope to enhance cultural exchanges and encourage mutual understanding and communication between Chinese and German youth.
