What happens when a luxury brand from Britain comes to the thousand-year-old City of the Rams? Collaborating with young traditional paper-cutting artist, Ms. Guo Meng, for the first time, Langham Place, Guangzhou presented a fine exhibition of traditional Chinese paper-cut works titled “When Langham Meets Guangzhou.” Apart from the customised paper-cuttings showcased whole day at the lobby on Floor 4, paper-cutting classes were also offered to youngsters from China and abroad during the opening of the exhibition. This event has been a fulfilled promise of the hotel to support and promote the arts as part of its commitment to elevate the quality of life of the citizens of Guangzhou.
Artwork Introduction
Artist Guo Meng displayed 20 pieces from his collection, showcasing the landscape and culture of Guangzhou, as well as the brand features of Langham. Among the amazing handcrafted works were “Past and Present of Guangzhou,” “Meet the Old Guangzhou,” “Gan Xu in Old Guangzhou,” “Miss Xiguan” and “Lion Dance Guangzhou,” vividly presenting the skyline, distinctive architecture and cultural treasures of Guangzhou. “Impression of London” and “British Style” depicted the landmarks of London and a variety of British elements. Inspired by the architecture of Langham’s hotels, remaining works were custom-made for Langham by Guo, including “Langham Place, Guangzhou,” “Experience Xiguan Style at Ming Court,” “The Langham Afternoon Tea” and “Langham Pink Rose”. Using traditional carving elements, the artwork “Langham Place, Guangzhou” distinctly depicted the city’s well-spaced skyscrapers, illustrating the amazing and beautiful integration of traditional and modern elements with exquisite skill. “Experience Xiguan Style at Ming Court” highlighted the high standards of the hotel’s Ming Court Chinese restaurant, decorated with Manchu windows of coloured glass and elements of Xiguan architecture.
Chinese and Expat Children Come Together to Create Colourful Cut-outs
During the paper-cutting exhibition, Langham Place, Guangzhou also held paper-cutting classes in the spacious and well-lit Alfresco. Ten primary-school students from Huo Cun primary school in Guangzhou’s Luogang District and Twelve expat children from American School attended the fun workshop. Under the guidance of Guo, children from different backgrounds each finished a paper-cut artwork made with their own hands. Ms. Guo presented little British-style Langham toy bears to three children whose works stood out from the rest. At the end of the class, each child cheerfully took home his or her own paper-cut artwork as souvenir.
As part of the hotel’s first cooperation with Urban Family magazine and Inno Community Development Organisation, Langham Place, Guangzhou invited two groups of children from completely different backgrounds to experience the joy of making traditional Chinese paper-cuttings together, interacting and helping one another during the activity. For the children, this paper-cutting class was a valuable experience
outside of school. In particular, for the youngsters from Luogang District, who come from migrant families, being able to attend a class with children of other nationalities and enjoy buffet dinner served at a five-star hotel gave them the kind of caring and fun-filled afternoon that they deserved to experience. Children from migrant families and expat communities can rarely play or even meet each other during their time in Guangzhou. Such art based activity can be seen as a sample to make social inclusion really happen.
