My Guangdong, a program produced by Guangdong Radio and Television’s(GRT) Radio News Centre Radio English Service, held a special event on Wednesday (July 6th) in the heart of Guangzhou’s bustling CBD at the Happy Monk, called 'My Funny Guangdong'. The aim of the event was to promote the My Guangdong show to a wider audience and gain more awareness for the wonderful Southern China's Guangdong Province.
GRT Radio News Center Chief Editor Mr. Zhang Jingzhong welcomed the guests. Previous guests and friends of the program were invited to share their funny stories of living in Guangdong with a live audience. They included Joanna Skoczek, Consul-General of the Republic of Poland in Guangzhou, Dr. Harley Seyedin, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in South China, Jeremy Sargent OBE Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce Guangdong, Lena Gidwani, Chief Editor - Urban Family, Dr. Kate Gaynor, US Family Medicine physician, Duncan Lees, Lecturer at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Seerat Kaur, a medical Intern in Guangzhou.
The host of the event, Matt Horn MBE, also one of the hosts of the My Guangdong program has been living in Guangzhou for 13 years. He shared one funny story for each of the years that he has been living in the city.He said :"Ageism–I was interviewed by Guangzhou Daily after an event to mark the end of SARS. I was happy to help a fellow journalist until Guangwai's International Office showed me the story saying 67-year-old Matt Horn. I was 37 at the time."
Joanna Skoczek, Consul-General of the Republic of Poland in Guangzhou,said that: "I buy lemons. I mean, I stand by the huge pile of lemons. The shopkeeper approaches me saying ” American.“ Do these lemons come from the US? I ask, a bit astonished. What, he says, not the lemons, you! You are American.Well, I am not. How come, he asks, so where are you from? I am Polish, I come from Poland (Bolan in Chinese). Helan? (Holland) No, Bolan. Ah, Bolan, ok. 3 lemons for 10 kuai. Not a bad deal."
Dr. Harley Seyedin, the President of American Chamber of Commerce in South China, Vice Chairman in U.S.China Economic and Trade Policy, the Asia Pacific Council of American Chambers of Commerce, President of Allelon Energy Partners. He said: "My first efforts at learning Chinese when I arrived in China some 25 years ago. I made it my top priority to learn Mandarin Chinese as soon as possible. That day, my wife and I went to have lunch at a Chinese Restaurant. After being seated ,I anxiously awaited the arrival of the waitress at our table. As soon as she arrived I looked right into her eyes and as clearly as I could, said “Nin Jiao Shen Ma Ming zi”. She looked at me very puzzled and answered back “I am Sorry, I Don’t Speak English”.
